John L. Tishman Auditorium, University Center

Tishman Auditorium, located at 63 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10011, is the largest venue in the University Center at The New School. It is a versatile space designed for various events, including large lectures, conferences, workshops, film screenings, dance and musical performances, and fashion shows.

Meeting, Conference, and Event Facilities

• Capacity and Seating Configurations:

• The auditorium can accommodate 491 to 646 people, depending on the stage configuration. By adding telescopic seating stored in rooms U201 to U202 on the second floor, it can accommodate up to 812 people.

• Stage Configurations:

• The auditorium features modern bamboo walls and several stage configurations, including a fashion runway setup. The upper seating area can be converted into two classrooms (rooms 201 and 202).

• Audiovisual and Facilities:

• The auditorium is equipped with multi-image projection, a main screen with a projection image of 15'9" x 47'0", a surround-sound system, theatrical lighting, video conferencing capability, and a podium.

Additional Venues

While Tishman Auditorium is the primary venue, other spaces within The New School campus are also available for meetings and events:

• Ernst C. Stiefel Hall:

• Capacity: Up to 108 people
• Services: User-friendly lighting and sound controls, recording booth, presentation technology, two American Steinway D concert grand pianos, audio and video recording capability, and video projection and live sound capability.

• Arnie Lawrence Hall:

• Capacity: Up to 120 people
• Services: Steinway Model B grand piano, Fender Rhodes electric piano, Gretsch Catalina Jazz three-piece drum kit, audio and video recording capability, and video projection and live sound capability.

• Baisley Powell Elebash Recital Hall:

• Capacity: Up to 116 people
• Services: Recording booth, acoustical treatments, smart classroom technology, and tiered seating.

• John L. Tishman Auditorium (Alternate Configuration):

• Capacity: Up to 800 people (including additional seating from converted classrooms)
• Services: Multi-image projection, main screen, surround sound system, theatrical lighting, video conferencing, and podium.

• Alvin Johnson/J.M. Kaplan Hall Auditorium:

• Capacity: 468 people (including balcony)
• Services: Piano, LCD projector and screen, digital cinema projector (Christie Solaria One) with surround sound, and limited theatrical lighting.

• Klein Conference Room:

• Capacity: Up to 80 people for a reception or 60 people seated
• Services: Hardwood floors, natural light from four windows, projection screen, and LCD projector.
