Teatro Heredia Adolfo Mejía, Cartagena

The Adolfo Mejía Theater, commissioned by Henrique Luis Román during the presidency of Rafael Reyes in 1905, is a significant cultural landmark. Designed by Luis Felipe Jaspe, its architectural inspiration draws from the Tacón Theater in Havana and the Reina Emma Theater in Curacao. The theater was established to fulfill the community's need for a more accessible public space for cultural performances, moving beyond just economic interests that were previously catered to by the Marinero Theater. Its construction took place within the grounds of the abandoned Chapel of La Merced, which had fallen into disuse during the wars of independence, revitalizing the area and serving as a hub for artistic expression.
