The Skull Tower

The Skull Tower (Ćele Kula), constructed in 1809 by the Ottomans, is a unique and haunting monument located on the outskirts of Niš. This stone structure serves as a grim reminder of the past, built in retaliation against the Serbian people following the Battle of Čegar. The tower is approximately 4 meters high and features a quadrangular shape adorned with 952 skulls arranged in 14 rows on each side, all facing outward. These skulls were sourced from fallen Serbian soldiers and were preserved in a macabre display of power. Annually, the monument attracts over 30,000 visitors, drawn by its historical significance and the chilling story it tells of conflict and revenge.
